Free AI Essay Detector.
Check a paper before submission and know how it reads to a detector. Honest scores, plus the playbook if your real writing gets flagged.
Scores 40 to 69 are inconclusive. Never punish on a score alone.
Why students check their own essays
The most common visitor to this page did nothing wrong. They wrote a paper, they know their school runs detection software, and they want to know how their writing reads before someone else decides for them. That is rational in 2026. Detectors carry documented false positive rates, formal academic prose trips them more than casual writing, and the consequences of a flag arrive faster than the appeals process that undoes one.
So check defensively. If your honest essay reads above 70 here, it may read high on institutional tools too, and you want your evidence assembled before the email arrives: drafts, outline notes, version history in Google Docs or Word. A document that grew over hours of incremental edits is the strongest authorship proof that exists. The full escalation playbook lives in our false positives guide.
What raises scores on real essays
Academic register is the big one: formal vocabulary, careful hedging and uniform paragraph structure are exactly the smoothness a detector measures. Citation-dense passages read formulaic because the genre demands formula. Non-native English speakers face the harshest version of this bias, with peer-reviewed research measuring sharply elevated false positive rates on their writing. And heavy grammar-tool use sits in between: full-sentence rewrites by an assistant genuinely move the text toward machine patterns.
Scan body paragraphs without the bibliography, in 2 to 3 sections. If a section reads above 70, that is where to concentrate your process evidence, or simply where to revise in your own voice before submitting.
If you used AI somewhere in the process
Most universities now distinguish between AI as a brainstorming or outlining aid and AI as the author. Know your course policy specifically, because it varies by instructor. If permitted use is disclosed use, disclose it. A detector score cannot tell a brainstormed-then-written essay from a generated-then-edited one, but your instructor reading your drafts can, in your favor. What schools actually run, and what their scores mean, is covered in what AI detector colleges use and how accurate Turnitin really is.

Should students check their own essays?
Yes, defensively. If your honest writing scores high, you want to know before your instructor does. Keep drafts, notes and version history so you can demonstrate your process if a school tool flags you.
My honest essay scored as AI. What now?
First, do not panic: false positives are a known failure mode of every detector. Gather your drafts and history, then read our false positives guide for the concrete steps and your rights.
Is this the same tool colleges use?
No. Schools mostly use Turnitin and similar institutional tools. Scores will not match exactly because engines differ, but a low score here is a reasonable signal your text reads human. See what colleges use.
Does citation-heavy academic writing confuse it?
Quotes and citations are formulaic by nature and can nudge scores up. When checking an essay, you can scan body paragraphs without the bibliography for a cleaner reading.
