Why writing needs different judgment than content

Writing is personal in a way generic content is not. An essay carries a grade, a cover letter carries a career, an email carries a relationship. When you point a detector at writing, the cost of a wrong verdict lands on a person, which is why this page exists separately from the content detector: same engine, different stakes, different advice.

The advice is this. Use the score as the start of judgment, not the end of it. A cover letter scoring 85 reads machine drafted; whether that matters depends on the role, the norm in your industry and what you actually need from the document. An essay scoring 85 is a reason to look at drafts and version history, not a verdict of misconduct. The number is an instrument reading. You are still the examiner.

The genres, and how they score

Essays and papers. Academic prose is formal by requirement, which pushes human-written essays toward the mixed band more often than casual writing. Citation-heavy passages read formulaic because they are. Scan body paragraphs without the bibliography, and read the essay detector page for the student-specific playbook.

Cover letters and applications. The most templated genre in existence: even fully human letters follow a formula, so expect elevated baseline scores. Reserve judgment for readings above the 70 line, and weigh them against the candidate’s other writing.

Emails and business writing. Short emails sit near the sample-size floor, so scan threads or longer messages rather than three-line notes. Reports and memos score reliably; the uniform corporate register raises scores slightly for everyone.

Creative writing. Fiction and personal essays usually read strongly human when they are. Machine-generated fiction is improving, but its evenness still shows at paragraph scale.

Grammar tools blur the line

Heavy use of full-sentence rewrite features moves any text toward machine patterns, because a machine did rewrite it. Light correction of typos and agreement errors barely moves the dial. If you grade or screen, ask about tool use instead of assuming.

Frequently asked

Does it work on emails and business writing?

Yes. Business prose is well inside the training distribution. Note that very formulaic genres, like templated outreach emails, can read slightly AI even when human written, because the genre itself is formulaic.

Can it check writing for plagiarism too?

No. Plagiarism detection compares text against sources; AI detection scores statistical patterns. They answer different questions. A text can be 100% original and 100% AI written, or copied and fully human.

Will it flag writing assisted by grammar tools?

Grammar fixes alone rarely move the score. Heavier assistance, like full-sentence rewrites from an AI assistant, shifts the text toward machine patterns and raises the score, which is an accurate description of what happened.

Should employers screen cover letters with this?

Only as a signal, never as a filter. A high score tells you the letter reads machine written. It does not tell you the candidate is dishonest or unqualified. We recommend reading scores 40 to 69 as no information.
